Quote of the Week #17

"Why do we feel an obligation to certify emotions with some kind of retrospective, self-imposed authenticity?” – Chuck Klosterman

You may, or may not, have noticed my absence as of late - I would say that I have been very busy and could explain all the reasons but then I thought of this quote. All I can say is that I'm trying to get back into blogging again. It's something I love and I don't want to let it go.

Let's Talk Books - Love Triangles

Today with this Let’s Talk Books post I wanted to discuss a prominent theme in much of YA literature, which is of course The Love Triangle.

I don’t know how, when or why Love Triangles have become so popular, although I know, unlike some, that it isn’t all down to the Twilight series. I think it is interesting how often it occurs and I wanted to present my pros and cons. (When I’m talking about Love Triangles I am referring to a story in which two guys are trying to win the heart of the girl protagonist)

Firstly the Cons! (‘cos we all love a good moan about book related topics)

Cons

  1. Unequal portrayal or never going to happen – My biggest problem with Love Triangles is when you can so clearly tell who is going to end up together yet the author insists on adding a love triangle (Twilight case and point) and therefore the attempt at creating one is a poor one. I also dislike when the guy who ultimately will be left on his own isn’t given the time and attention that is needed to even give him a fair enough chance to win the protagonist’s heart. To put it eloquently I hate when the author gives the underdog a ‘snowball’s chance in hell’ at succeeding.
  2. Causes division – Anyone who has a favourite ‘Team’ knows the amount of hate and character bashing that goes on where love triangles are involved. Splitting a community of readers is never a good thing; we all know how passionate reader become so when they have this divide fighting and arguments just seem, sadly, inevitable.
  3. Detracts or undermines the plot – Maybe this is me being particular, but I found that when Love Triangles are involved, especially ones that are executed poorly, it just detracts from everything that is going on in the story or sometimes just completely takes it over and ultimately undermines the plot and all the awesome work the author has created.

After all that I do see some positives to Love Triangles, so without further ado here are my pros:

Pros

  1. We all love a bit of drama -  Don’t we? I know I do, I love the tension that Love Triangles create and the conflicting emotions. Maybe this is my more masochistic side that enjoys all the angst.
  2. Who would say no to more romance? – I certainly wouldn’t. I love that you get double the amount of emotion and romance with Love Triangles. I also love it when you yourself wouldn’t be able to decide between the two guys; which is, in my opinion, the best kind of love triangle. When Love Triangles are done well, they’re done well. I love where you really can’t decide who should win or even know who will win and the best example of this that I’ve read is the Infernal Devices. If anyone is attempting to write a love triangle get thee to The Infernal Devices – Cassandra Clare shall show you how it’s done.
  3. Normally showcases the characters duality – I like how normally the two guys in the love triangle represent different sides to the female character. This reminds me of The Hunger Games where Peeta showcases Katniss’ compassion and love, especially for those in need whereas Gale showcases her fight and spirit and rebellious side which I loved (Although Team Peeta all the way.)

Overall I would say that I am a fan of Love Triangles that enhance the plot, keep me engaged and guessing as to who is going to win,  ones that are fair and ones that add intrigue and depth to all the characters involved.

So those are the pros and cons that come to my mind when I think of Love Triangles, what do you think? Are you for or against them? Do you have a favourite Love Triangle? What are your pros and cons for them?

Book Review: Eve by Anna Carey

Title: Ever
Author: Anna Carey
Pages: 336
Series: Eve #1
Publication Date: 4th October 2011
Publisher: HarperTeen
The year is 2032, sixteen years after a deadly virus—and the vaccine intended to protect against it—wiped out most of the earth’s population. The night before eighteen-year-old Eve’s graduation from her all-girls school she discovers what really happens to new graduates, and the horrifying fate that awaits her.

Fleeing the only home she’s ever known, Eve sets off on a long, treacherous journey, searching for a place she can survive. Along the way she encounters Caleb, a rough, rebellious boy living in the wild. Separated from men her whole life, Eve has been taught to fear them, but Caleb slowly wins her trust...and her heart. He promises to protect her, but when soldiers begin hunting them, Eve must choose between true love and her life. (Goodreads)

I took Eve out of the library on a whim after seeing reviews for Once. Eve starts off incredibly quickly, there is no nonsense and it gets straight to the point – I liked this, we didn’t wait 100 pages for something we already knew was going to happen, however I felt that certain scenes and big reveals had much less of an impact because of this. This made me feel that the world and story building was somewhat lacking. I also had trouble understanding Eve’s feelings because of this lacking of connection, such as when she is missing her friend, Pip; from the school she runs away from, I wasn’t as empathetic due to not having seen their relationship.

However I found myself really enjoying Eve once the story developed further. I love the way Eve and Caleb met and the feel/description of Eve’s travels through the woods. One of my favourite scenes is where Eve teaches the group of boys she is staying with how to read and write, emphasising the power of learning and words. I liked how this lead to a bigger theme of questioning authority or not taking it on face value – Eve has been taught her whole life how evil men are, yet here she is sitting with a group of them. I found the message pretty compelling, saying that just because we are receiving information from a supposedly reliable source doesn’t mean it is the truth. Another theme I loved throughout the book was Eve trying to figure out love, or understanding it more.
I loved the subtle intensity of certain scenes in Eve; specifically ones where she is almost caught, I found that they were really gripping but not in an obvious way – it’s this terrifying thought of this awful power that this corrupt leader, who is trying to capture her, has.

As for Eve, and her narration, I found her quite grating to begin with although I think that was because she still believed all that she had been taught at school. As the story progressed I loved how she developed, into someone stronger – you know, holding people at gun point is always something I find badass-y.

Despite all this I found it took me quite a while to read Eve, I didn’t find it as compelling as I thought it would be although there was a lot of unanswered questions which I found myself wanting to know the answer to, even if I thought the ending was rather disappointing. I would definitely give Once a read to see what happens with Eve and Caleb.

My favourite quotes from Eve:

‘..love was bearing witness. That it was the act of watching someone’s life, of simply being there to say; your life is worth,’

‘“I’m sorry,” I said.
“I don’t get why everyone says that,” When he looked up at me his eyes caught the light. “It’s not like it’s your fault,”’

‘“Love is just,” – I searched for the right words – “caring about someone very deeply. Feeling like that person matters to you , like your whole world would be sadder without them in it.”’

‘“I loved my mother, too,” I said, “I still do. That’s the thing – it never goes away, even if the person does,”’

‘Happiness is a moment,’

‘I learned then a crucial truth; that a relationship between two people can be judged by the list of things unspoken between them.’

‘Love was death’s only adversary, the only thing powerful enough to combat its clawing, desperate grasp’

Blogspiration #13

Blogspiration is a weekly meme hosted by both GrowingUp YA and Saz101. The meme was created to help spark inspiration among bloggers, readers and writers alike. An inspirational quote/picture/video is posted weekly, on the day of the author's choosing, so that it may inspire creativity, conversation or just a little SOMETHING.

I can't remember where I found this now, probably tumblr, that's where I find everything for my Blogspiration posts! This quote is from The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which I was talking about today with two of my best friends. And they both love this quote and it made me realise how lucky I was to have them and how sad I am that I haven't got to spend a lot of time with them. I really need to change that. I also haven't told them about this blog, or anyone outside my immediate family for that matter - something I also wish to change. All of which I think relates back to this quote; it's one I think everyone can identify with.

Quote of the Week #16

I have love in me the likes of which you can scarcely imagine and rage the likes of which you would not believe. If I cannot satisfy the one, I will indulge the other.” – Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

I love this quote, I love the passion that it has but also the truth - we all have this duality inside of us, the capability to love but also to rage and that it is so very easy to switch between them when we don't get one.

Liebster Blogger Award

I've been tagged by two people for the Liebster Award - 2 B Read and Breath of Books. So I'll give the 11 facts about me, answer both their 11 questions and then tag and ask new questions to 11 wonderful bloggers.

The Rules
  1. Post 11 facts about yourself.
  2. Answer the 11 questions that the blogger gives you
  3. Tag 11 other bloggers that have 200 followers
  4. Tell these bloggers that you tagged them

11 Facts about me:

  1. I’m a Hufflepuff and proud! Even though we just came last in the house cup…
  2. I’m a nerdfighter! DFTBA
  3. My favourite night of the week is weirdly Monday because The Lizzie Bennet Diaries is uploaded and me and my family have this tradition where we eat Tacos whilst watching Once Upon a Time (It’s awesome)
  4. Currently my favourite album is Blown Away by Carrie Underwood. I went and saw her perform for my sister’s birthday last month and it was awesome and ever since then it’s all I’ve been listening to.
  5. My favourite words are – Hurricane, Absolution and Fervently and I hate the word nonchalant with a passion.
  6. I’ve only ever wanted two future jobs – A farmer (when I was 5) and then a Teacher from 6 till today.
  7. I have a weird obsession with dedications (and acknowledgements) and so often judge a book by them. This was started by the East of Eden's (which is one of my favourite books)  dedication which I love so much:
    Dear Pat,
You came upon me carving some kind of little figure out of wood and you said, “Why don’t you make something for me?”
I asked you what you wanted, and you said, “A box.”
    “What for?”
    “To put things in.”
    “What kind of things?”
    “Whatever you have,” you said.
Well, here’s your box. Nearly everything I have is in it, and it is not full. Pain and excitement are in it, and feeling good or bad and evil thoughts and good thoughts- the pleasure of design and some despair and the indescribable joy of creation.
And on top of these are all the gratitude and love I have for you.
And still the box is not full.
    John.
  8. I’m also obsessed with quotes which is why every week on Tuesday I have my quote of the week. Also when reading a book I always write down the quotes I like on the paper I use as a bookmark.
  9. In February this year, I had an appendicular abscess. I had to have my appendix  removed and spent 11 days in hospital
  10. I have two older sisters, Rachael and Melissa, who are my best friends.
  11. Whenever I'm asked what is my special talent I always say that I can say that alphabet backwards. Some talent I know.

Questions for 2 B Read:

1. What do you love most about blogging?

I love being able to recommend books that I’ve loved to other people so that they can enjoy them too; I also love the blogging community, talking with a bunch of bookworms is the best thing ever :)

2. What is your favorite book cover?

Currently it is probably The Fault in Our Stars, I love the simplicity of it and the colour- it’s just beautiful.

3. Dust jacket or no?

The one time I took off a dust jacket of a book I lost it! And still haven’t found it, so I keep them on; also I think the book looks nicer.

4. Who's your favorite author?

It’s probably joint with John Green and John Steinbeck – I love my Johns.

5. What's a song you find goes perfectly with a book? Which book?

I’m terrible at associating songs with books, I don’t really do it very often. This is kind of cheating because it is written about the book but I love this original song about The Fault in Our Stars by kaysyconundrum on Youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaIU0zoe9YE

6. texting/talking/or video chatting?

Talking because I’m terrible at texting and don’t video chat.

7. Do you pre-plan your blog posts?

I get an idea of what I want but I don’t have post ready in advance, posts are normally thought of a couple of days before they are posted and then created the day of or before.

8. Favorite color and why?

My favourite colour is blue (you may be able to tell from my blog!)  I don’t know why, it just always has been.

9. Do you except ARC's? If so what's your favorite thing about that? ie. reading/reviewing/receiving

I do not receive ARCs, that’s still one aspect of blogging I’m unsure of.

10. Do you have a Goodreads account? If so what is the best thing about that program in your eyes?

Yes! I love Goodreads, it’s one of my most visited sites. I love being able to keep track of all the books I’ve read or what to read.

11. What's your favorite number? Does it have anything to do with a book?

I don’t really have a favourite number… If I had to say it would probably be 21 just because it’s my birth date.

Questions for Breath of Books:

1. What is your favorite thing about book blogging?

As I said before I love the community, I love how it is one place where I can be proud to be a book nerd and it been seen as something cool or awesome instead of boring.

2. What book are you currently reading?

I’m currently reading Enthralled which is an anthology and thinking of starting Legend by Marie Lu

3. What are five books you want to read this summer?

I have to read some books for English during the summer so I’ll read Fahrenheit 451, 1984, The Grapes of Wrath but for fun I really want to read Partials by Dan Wells and The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa - I've been meaning to get around to them for a while

4. How long have you been blogging?

I created my blog on 29th December 2011 but didn’t really get into blogging until the start of March 2012

5. Do you participate in any memes? If so, which ones?

My favourite meme is Blogspiration, which is hosted by GrowingUp YA and Saz101 - It's fun and I love doing it! If you haven't done it, you should! I’ve just recently started participating in Stacking the Shelves and I sometimes participate in Waiting on Wednesday.

6. Who is your favorite author?

As I said before it’s a tie between John Steinbeck and John Green

7. Do you prefer series or stand – alone books?

This depends, I love series but I don’t like them if they are very long. I really like trilogies - I know they've been a big trend lately, but I do love stand alones. I'm probably going to say stand alones because the majority of my favourite books are.

8. Do you have a Goodreads account?

Yes, I love using it! You should totally add me

9. Have you gotten any ARCs since you’ve started blogging?

I have not.

10. Do you like to write as well, or do you only like to read?

I write occasionally and I did successfully complete NaNoWriMo last year and I’m going to attempt it this year but it’s not something I love; I prefer reading out of the two.

I TAG ALL OF YOU! (With love)

Book Review: Struck by Jennifer Bosworth

Title: Struck
Author: Jennifer Bosworth
Pages: 373
Series: Struck #1
Publication Date: 8th May 2012
Publisher:  Farrar, Straus and Giroux BYR

Mia Price is a lightning addict. She’s survived countless strikes, but her craving to connect to the energy in storms endangers her life and the lives of those around her.

Los Angeles, where lightning rarely strikes, is one of the few places Mia feels safe from her addiction. But when an earthquake devastates the city, her haven is transformed into a minefield of chaos and danger. The beaches become massive tent cities. Downtown is a crumbling wasteland, where a traveling party moves to a different empty building each night, the revelers drawn to the destruction by a force they cannot deny. Two warring cults rise to power, and both see Mia as the key to their opposing doomsday prophecies. They believe she has a connection to the freak electrical storm that caused the quake, and to the far more devastating storm that is yet to come.

Mia wants to trust the enigmatic and alluring Jeremy when he promises to protect her, but she fears he isn’t who he claims to be. In the end, the passion and power that brought them together could be their downfall. When the final disaster strikes, Mia must risk unleashing the full horror of her strength to save the people she loves, or lose everything (Goodreads)

Even just the word ‘Struck’ has a sense of awe about it, and that is what I felt when reading the synopsis of this book – Struck has an incredibly unique concept which I loved reading about. The subject matter and the whole plot to me were truly captivating and I just had to see where this all would go.
Struck starts a little while after a devastating earthquake has destroyed all of Los Angeles as we know it. I love post – apocalyptic novels and stories and I love that inside of being set far into the future Struck is set in the modern day, which makes it even scarier because events like this are just around the corner. How Mia experiences the world could also be our experience; all of which is something I haven’t see very often in these types of stories,

Another thing about Struck’s format was that it was set over the course of four days, and separated into four parts. These four parts start by telling you how many days it is until ‘The Storm’. I always feel, with an book with such a short time period, it augments our experiences and sets a high level of intensity all throughout the book – the ticking clock, counting down to some cataclysmic event, the unknown ‘storm’ that had me instantly intrigued.

The intrigue didn’t stop there; the plot has tons of mysterious and riddles and things that you are, like Mia, completely in the dark about. This makes the grand reveals even more shocking. Also these reveals are placed few and far between; these slower reveals keep you on your toes. The suspense makes you question things and you, like Mia, can’t really tell who is good or bad or who she should trust.

Probably my favourite part of Struck is the interesting description and techniques used to describe the feel of the lightning and Mia’s powers; it just gave me goose-bumps to read about it.

As a protagonist I thought Mia was awesome, she was strong, a little hard headed yet only wanted to protect her family; doing anything she could to try and help her brother and her mother – I really liked this family dynamic and the emphasis that was placed on the whole Price family, something that is sometimes forgotten in YA; while making her decision Mia was always thinking about her family.

I had two problems with Struck. The first was that I didn’t realise how much of a key role these warring cults played in the events of the story – everything got a little crazy and uber religious for my liking and kind of detracted from the mysteriousness because I was just creeped out by these weird cults.

The second problem I had was Jeremy! Mia’s love interest. At the very start of the novel Jeremy is being a complete and utter stalker and even tries to kill Mia, once she discovers this she runs away from him and tells him to leave her alone. I was happy about this – Mia wouldn’t be another one of those girls who is stupid enough to fall for a guy trying to kill her. Boy, was I wrong. Not only did he try to kill her he also just wanted to boss her around and control her. My biggest pet peeve was when they were at this party which is about to become very violent but Mia doesn’t want to leave until she finds her brother but Jeremy tries dragging her off the dance floor against her will and then when that doesn’t work he literally throws her over his shoulder and takes her anyway. I literally had to stop myself from the throwing the book against the wall. I preserved because of the story and Mia but it made me hate Jeremy and definitely didn’t make me root for their relationship to last.

Overall I liked Struck; the concept, the writing and especially Mia all really appealed to me and luckily it outweighed the problems I had. If you’re looking for a really unique and interesting read, unlike anything you’ve read before, you should definitely take a look at Struck.

My Favourite Quotes from Struck:

“What men practice and what they preach are two vastly different things.”

“That had nothing to do with his power, and everything to do with the power of his words, and the time, he chose to say them. He spoke to people’s fear, and the fear listened.”

“It was easy to be humble when you had nothing to be proud of.”

Trailer Thursday #3

Trailer Thursday is a feature in which I show you book trailers or book to movie adaptations that I've seen and think look really exciting.

I once again have two trailers, the first of which is for Hemlock by Kathleen Peacock

I like the simplicity of this trailer, a mixture between acting out the story and reading an excerpt, I also like the heartbeat in the background and the blue colouring; which makes the trailer seem more intense.

The second trailer is for Unraveling by Elizabeth Norris

I have seen reviews for Unraveling around recently but actually didn't know what it was about, I saw this trailer and I was instantly intrigued. I love the ticking clock and the mystery of it, it was so intriguing I had to immediately go look up the full summary on goodreads and I have to say it sounds awesome! Definitely one for the TBR pile

What do you think of these trailers? Which one do you like best? Have you read these books, do you think the trailers are a good representation of them?

My Favourite Books of 2012 So Far!

Yesterday was the halfway point of 2012! We're already on the latter half of the year so I thought I'd go over my favourite books I've read this year and just a couple of points to why I liked them and why you should read them if you haven't already!

- Great narrative style and voice.
- Incredibly strange, mysterious and scary which isn't very common in YA. It also has so many weird twists and turns which keep you guessing.
- Mind games and questioning whether Mara is actually seeing these things or if she is going mad.

- Hilariously sweet, funny, witty and charming - This book literally made me smile all the way through.
- Completely addictive book that you won't want to put down.
- I have only one other thing to say for why I loved this book and you should read it - Etienne St. Clair.

- Andy's narrative style is A-MAZING! It is hilarious, thoughtful, so truthful and undeniably likeable.
- Revolution has a great balance between light and dark, there are moments that will make you laugh out loud whilst others will make you cry - it's a roller coaster ride that is worth the trip.
- Andy. I loved Andy. I may have a bit of a girl crush on Andy - she's one of the most realistic teenager I've ever read about. I would love for her to be one of my best friends.

- A completely addictive read that I read in next to no time. It is  short, sweet and hilarious read that will have you laughing and crying in a matter of moments.
- Unique format - only taking place over the course of one day - I loved how this condesenced version made it even easier to read quickly
- Hadley and Oliver's relationship - Their relationship and development is optimistic yet realistic

- A great high fantasy, with a well - developed world. Also if you're relatively new to the high fantasy genre, like I am, I think it's a great starting book to see if this genre is for you.
- A strong protagonist - I loved Katsa and admire her strength, both emotional and physically, immensely
- The mix of action, travelling and romance - There was a great balance over everything which made me extremely happy.

- Utterly AMAZING! I cannot express how much I loved this book! It was definitely worth the wait and all the tears.
- A brilliant and captivating story/idea that had me racing desperately to the end to see what was going to happen.
- Great development - plot and character wise and definitely didn't fall into the second book curse. Also an incredible cliffhanger!

Those are my favourite books that I have read this year, quite a mixed bag but I love them all the same. I can't wait to see what the next half of the year has to bring!

What are your favourite books this year?
